My Volunteer Iowa Experience

Written by Andrew Fiamengo, volunteer intern through Drake University’s Writing Internship Program

I was brought onto Volunteer Iowa’s team as part of an internship program for Drake University to be the organization’s Service Enterprise Writing Intern. My job was to write case studies for Volunteer Iowa to encourage more nonprofits to undergo the Service Enterprise Initiative training.

What I appreciated most about my time at Volunteer Iowa was how helpful and communicative they are. My supervisors always provided timely advice on how to further improve my work, which was very important to me in trying to learn from my experiences as an intern.

Going into my final semester at Drake, as a writing major, I knew I wanted experience in technical writing, and this had been a fantastic opportunity. Not only did my experience at Volunteer Iowa expose me to the kind of environment I wished to be in, but I made tremendous strides as a writer.

I would wholeheartedly recommend people follow the same or similar path I did in my experience. Not only does Volunteer Iowa challenge you to reach your full potential, regardless of whatever position you are placed in, but you learn much along the way.

We are grateful to Andrew for his time as an intern with us, and welcome others who would be interested in opportunities with Volunteer Iowa to reach out!  We just might have a great way for you to give back, expand your skills, and get college credits towards graduation.  Email Brianne Fitzgerald, Communications & Engagement Officer, at brianne.fitzgerald@iowaeda.com.
