50 Faces of Volunteerism – Dan Collins

Nominated by Stacy Paper with Grand Haven Retirement in Eldridge, IA

Tell us a little about the volunteer:

Dan Collins is the building administrator for Grand Haven Retirement Community in Eldridge, Iowa where he has worked for nearly 10 years. Dan has devoted his life to serving the senior community in the Quad Cities as well as the general populace. Dan serves as a volunteer medic, volunteer firefighter and is involved in various senior living organizations throughout the QC. While his daytime job keep him busy, Dan is never unable to find the time to go above and beyond to serve someone in need. From the little things such as driving a resident to a last minute doctors appointment to bigger obstacles in his busy schedule like picking up a medic shift, Dan does everything with a smile. He’s known around the Quad Cities as “Happy Dan” and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who feels otherwise. Dan’s positive personality has inspired his staff to be more involved in the community, many of whom serve on their own non-profits and charity organizations, but has also inspired his children. Dan’s son Hunter was a volunteer firefighter throughout high school and just began college pursuing a degree to be a fireman. Dan has never asked for recognition as a volunteer and quite often fades into the background letting his work go unrecognized.

Why does this volunteer deserve to be recognized with a 50 Faces of Volunteers spotlight?

Dan is an extremely deserving volunteer because he is truly selfless in the service he does. He doesn’t care to see his name published, doesn’t look for a huge thank you in any form, simply serves because he cares and he wants to put more good into the world. He is inspiring to everyone he comes in contact with and never ceases to spread joy with his infection grin.
