Tell us a little about the volunteer group: The Dubuque Black Men Coalition is a network of African American men who have came together in efforts to improve the quality of life within the Dubuque Community. We accomplish this through concentrated support and leadership to programs and services that aims to offer positive alternatives in educational, vocational, employment and recreational activities for African American boys and young adult men.
Our network consist of men working in both the private and public sector in the Dubuque community. Are focus is to make our community a better place for all, particularly for young boys and men of color. Many of the young boys and men of color in our area have arrived here from outside the Dubuque area and may be struggling to adjust. Our group allows these young boys and men to know/see/ build intentional relationship with positive role models that can encourage them to strive for all they can be. The Black Men Coalition connects youth to educational opportunities and truly mentor the youth; allowing the youth to realize their full potential and learn the skills needed to contribute to the community. As of August 2016, our group has volunteered over 100 hours to the community in mentoring and programming.

Why does this volunteer deserve to be recognized with a 50 Faces of Volunteers spotlight? As of August 2016, the BMC have volunteer over 85 hours collectively in our community focusing on the following: Mentoring high school African American Boys; Taking African American Boys on a college tour; Offering programs/services that connect “all” students and families in need to school supplies and resources in the community.
