Guest submission from Elsa Pietscher, AmeriCorps VISTA member with United Way of the Great River Region in Keokuk, IA
To promote AmeriCorps programs during AmeriCorps Week 2017, I presented to a local Girl Scout Troop, part of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois Council. I arranged to speak with the scouts at their semi-monthly meeting. After hearing the young ladies recite the Girl Scout promise I gave them a brief introduction to AmeriCorps and what its members do in our country. Using the Girl Scout promise and information from the organization’s website I compared skills and attributes of a Girl Scout to the skills and opportunities in AmeriCorps. We discussed how it feels to help others and the power of many people working for a common goal. When I compared the number of AmeriCorps members serving this year to the population of our city, they were astounded. Hopefully these young ladies will consider AmeriCorps as another option once they complete high school.
Volunteer Iowa would like to thank Elsa for taking the time to share about her experience during AmeriCorps Week (March 4-11, 2017), and for dedicating a year of service to AmeriCorps. If you have a great AmeriCorps story as a current member OR alum that you would like to share with us, please email Brianne.firstname.lastname@example.org.
