50 Faces of Volunteers – Jana Stenback

Nominated by Nancy Franz, Life member of Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa

Tell us a little about the volunteer: Jana serves as a scientist in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Iowa State University. Her laboratory studies water quality in wetlands throughout Iowa. Jana has been an active member of all the communities where she has lived as a volunteer for Girl Scouts. She loves helping girls and young women reach their full potential through Girl Scouting. She especially enjoys sharing her love for the outdoors and the natural sciences.

Jana doesn’t keep track of her volunteer hours. Volunteering is fully integrated into all aspects of her life. Jana continues to make time for the girls she has mentored even after they graduate from high school or college. She is very passionate about helping young girls and women succeed in reaching their dreams. Jana sees her volunteering impacting the community by getting to observe many young girls turn into successful women. She recently ran into one of her former Girl Scouts who is receiving a graduate degree in environmental engineering, a topic she became interested in through Jana’s mentoring. Jana has additionally helped young girls in the community with service projects. She is always conscious of giving back to organizations that aid in Girl Scout functions.

Jana is constantly recruiting volunteers to help with Girl Scout activities. She successfully recruited, trained, and used over 30 volunteers for the 2016 Ames, Roland, Story City Girl Scout Day Camp with record camper attendance and success (Over 100 campers and volunteers).

What is the primary (one or two) organization(s) they serve? Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa Council

How long have they volunteered with this/these organization(s)? At least 10 hours per week for the last 20 years.

Why does this volunteer deserve to be recognized with a 50 Faces of Volunteers spotlight? Jana donates a huge amount of her time and resources to help girls and young women live happy and successful lives. Many Girl Scout activities in the Ames area would not take place if she no longer volunteered. A number of girls and young women would be less likely to reach their full potential without Jana’s guidance and volunteering.

Tell us about a great volunteer! We would love to recognize them as one of our “50 Faces of Volunteers.” Volunteer Iowa selects one nomination to feature every other Wednesday.

Nominating is easy! You’ll submit a short paragraph or two about the volunteer(s) and their experience. The who/what/where/when (or for how long) and, most importantly, the why of their volunteer cause. We have provided some questions to prompt responses. It’s also strong requested that you submit a photo with your nomination. This is a great opportunity to help showcase a dedicated volunteer or volunteer group in your community!
